Rosen attended a school in Reval (today Tallinn) from 1859 to 1866; afterward, he studied in St. Petersburg and a year in Leipzig. He received his doctorate in 1883 having defended his thesis on the history of the Arabic language. In the years 1872 to 1883, he worked as a lecturer, and from 1883 to 1885 as a full professor at St Petersburg University. From 1885 he was President of the Oriental Section of the Imperial Russian Archaeological Society, from 1900 a corresponding member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences.
